New Mercedes-Benz MPVs Master Winter Testing in the Arctic Circle

All newly developed vehicles from Mercedes-Benz Vans will be built on the modular, flexible and scalable Mercedes-Benz Van Architecture. Beginning in 2026, all-electric models will launch under the Van Electric Architecture (VAN.EA) , ushering in a new era for the brand. The Van Combustion Architecture (VAN.CA) will follow with state-of-the-art combustion engine vans. Regardless of the drivetrain, the new vehicle architecture allows for a clear differentiation between privately positioned vehicles in the luxury segment and commercially positioned transporters in the premium segment.

The future model portfolio will cater to a range of customer needs offering a versatile, spacious vehicle designed to provide exceptional space and comfort. From exclusive VIP and high-end limousine transport to luxurious family vehicles, the new model will deliver on both the flexibility customers require and the refined luxury they desire. The winter testing of these future multipurpose vehicles (MPVs) in Arjeplog, Sweden, proof their ability to endure even the most extreme climatic conditions.

The test drives near the Arctic Circle are part of a comprehensive testing strategy that encompasses various climate zones and test routes. The testing is specifically designed to evaluate the unique characteristics of the new MPVs with a strong emphasis on vehicle dynamics as well as the ventilation and heating of their spacious interior.

The test vehicles undergo an intensive program to assess their performance in extreme conditions enduring temperatures as low as -22 degrees Fahrenheit and on snow and ice-covered roads. These challenging tests provide valuable insights that are crucial for the successful completion of development and are the next major milestone on the way to reinventing the vehicle.

A primary objective of cold-weather testing is to analyze the behavior of the vehicle in slippery surfaces. Ice and snow can reduce grip levels by up to 90 percent compared to dry asphalt, greatly affecting acceleration, braking, and maneuverability.

Advanced suspension systems ensure an impressive driving experience in the new MPVs, with rear-axle steering enhancing handling and reducing the turning radius. The new architecture also supports 4MATIC all-wheel drive, significantly expanding the vehicles' range of applications and ensuring that they meet the highest standards regardless of weather conditions. All vehicles will be equipped with the latest version of the Mercedes-Benz Operating System (MB.OS), as well as a 800-volt charging system and a 22-kW AC charger1.

Thermal management and interior comfort inside the vehicle are further key focal points.  Special cold chambers are used to cool the vehicles before journeys, ensuring all systems function smoothly even at very low temperatures. The charging behavior and charging management system also undergo thorough testing and optimization.

The initial assessment, halfway through the multi-week testing period, indicates that the vehicles are excelling in even the most demanding test requirements amidst icy and snowy conditions.
