Interested in driving a "sports sedan with a fanny pack" ? Well, here it
is: the 2001 Audi S4 Avant Wagon. Put the famous Quattro all-wheel system
together with a killer V6 and a new electronic stabilization program, and
you're going to have to turn around and look at the rear cargo space in
order to realize you're in a wagon.
The 2.7-liter twin-turbo V6 engine includes twin intercoolers,
dual-overhead cams, five valves per cylinder, variable valve timing for the
intake camshaft and optimized combustion chambers. The result is 250
horsepower and 258 foot-pounds of torque. And the best companion to a
strong engine is even stronger brakes - this Audi's got 'em.
We enjoyed the Sport Interior package which included a sunroof, heated
front seats, a six-disc CD changer and a Bose premium audio system. If you
are looking for, and can afford, a somewhat bi-polar vehicle: part
practical cargo hauling wagon and part road-chewing roadster, then be sure
to test drive the surprising S4.
