The 2002 Mercury Mountaineer comes with either a 4.0-liter V6 making 210
horsepower or a 4.6-liter V8 pumping out 240 hp. These power packages will
impress you, even though the mileage numbers won't. We braved a hostile
winter storm that slammed into the Bay Area with winds up to 45mph - and
not only was the Mountaineer up for the challenge, it performed sure and
steady even while being buffeted on the Bay Bridge. The storm was reduced
to windshield nonsense while we enjoyed a Duke Ellington CD thanks to
the all-new independent rear suspension featuring a unique
porthole-in-frame design. Good news for the ride and handling.
That new suspension meant that the rear floor could now be 7 inches lower -
et voila, a third-row seat! - and a ground clearance to 9.2 inches. Noise,
vibration and harshness (NVH) are dramatically reduced as well. Other
features include a standard six-way power adjustable driver's seat, along
with optional adjustable pedals, heated front seats and heated exterior
mirrors. New safety features include optional side curtain airbags, a
stiffer body shell and a lower front bumper for improved crash
compatibility with other vehicles. Cosmetic additions include a
satin-finish grille and stylish head lamps.
